MongoDB can use any valid TLS/SSL certificate issued by a certificate authority, or a self-signed certificate. If you use a self-signed certificate, although the communications channel will be encrypted to prevent eavesdropping on the connection, there will be no validation of server identity. This leaves you vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack.
Current non-SSL default (no timed out in error string) behaviour is if there is a socket error then an AutoReconnect is raised. With SSL, there are moments where there are temporal network issues that can cause the SSL handshack to fail. This is raised as a ConnectionFailure but should be reclassified as an AutoReconnect.
